Expressions of interest are sought from suitably qualified people to be considered for appointment as the Independent Chairperson of the NSW Advisory Body for Strategic Release (ABSR).

About the Advisory Body

The ABSR overseas the whole-of-government assessment required by the Strategic Release Framework for petroleum exploration in NSW, the Competitive Selection Framework for petroleum exploration and, provides advice to the Minister for Natural Resources on these matters. 

Role of the Chairperson

The role of the Chairperson is to lead the activities of the ABSR by: 

  • ensuring that the ABSR performs its functions, acting within any relevant statutory powers and legal obligations, and complying with policies relevant to the ABSR, including whole-of-government policies 
  • chairing ABSR meetings 
  • commissioning reports and analysis required for decisions under the competitive selection framework 
  • supporting the management of conflicts of interest and confidentiality declarations.

Selection criteria

The Chairperson must have: 

  • substantial experience and the ability to work across and understand different stakeholder interests from government, community, and industry
  • extensive experience in convening meetings and facilitating consensus between stakeholder groups with diverse perspectives 
  • the ability to understand the technical issues relating to resource assessment, land use management and/or environmental and social issues related to petroleum exploration and production. 

Previous professional experience in resources, earth or social sciences or other related industries would be beneficial but is not required. 

The Chairperson must not have met any of the following criteria in the last five years: 

  • held any Local, State or Federal government elected positions 
  • donated or provided fee-for-service assistance, or been an employee of a resources or environment group, or lobbying group related to resources or the environment
  • been involved in a legal dispute associated with land use conflict 
  • had any immediate family member or spouse involved in any of the above. 

Remuneration and appointment term

Remuneration of $1,000 per sitting day in accordance with the Public Service Commission’s Boards and Committees Classification Framework. 

The appointment is for a term of up to three years. Suitable applicants will be subject to a probity check before appointment.
