Call for nominations for Ministerial appointment to the NSW Architects Registration Board: Member who is an Australian legal practitioner with expertise in building and construction law

The NSW Architects Registration Board (NSW ARB) is calling for nominations for appointment to the NSW ARB Board as the Member who is an Australian legal practitioner with expertise in building and construction law, as provided at Section 60(2)(d) of the Architects Act 2003.

The successful nominee will be appointed for a 2-year term from 7 December 2026 – 6 December 2028 by the Hon. Anoulack Chanthivong MP, Minister for Better Regulation and Fair Trading, Minister for Building.

About the NSW Architects Registration Board
The NSW ARB is established under the Architects Act 2003, the legislation regulating architects in NSW.  Each state and territory of Australia has its own architect registration board established under legislation.  In NSW there are approximately 6,500 registered architects and the NSW ARB is wholly funded from their registration fees.  The NSW ARB has four primary roles:  to protect consumers, register architects, inform the public, and promote architecture.  You can find more information about the NSW ARB on the website.

Composition of the Board
Six of the Board Members are appointed by the Minister on the basis of having particular knowledge and understanding of the architectural profession.  Two architect Board Members are elected by architects in accordance with the regulations.  Additionally, Board Members include the Immediate Past President of the NSW Chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects, the NSW Government Architect, and an architect who is an academic at a relevant educational institution.  The Board is chaired by the President, who is elected by the Board members.  A list of the current Board members is available here.

Commitment expected of Board members
As a member of the Board, you would be committing to attending 11 Board meetings per year. These are generally held in the NSW ARB Sydney Office (near Wynyard Station) from 4-6pm on the 4th Tuesday of each month (no meeting in January).  

As the Legal Member you would also Chair monthly meetings of the Complaints Committee at the NSW ARB Sydney Office (near Wynyard Station).

Payment
Remuneration of Board members is determined by the NSW Government Remuneration Framework for Boards and Committees.  Board members are paid a modest honorarium of $5,200 per annum plus an honorarium of $200 per committee appearance.

Your submission should include a covering letter and resume and address the following: 

• Your current role(s) and employment history 
• Extensive experience as an Australian legal practitioner in building and construction law as required at s60(2)(d) of the Act
• Experience in professional conduct or consumer protection environments and/or experience in legal/government processes involving complaints handling and investigations
• Demonstrated capacity to chair the Board’s Complaints Committee for the investigation of complaints against architects in accordance with Part 4 of the Act
• Experience in senior executive management or board roles
• Demonstrated skills, experience, and knowledge relevant to the Board’s primary objectives of registering architects, protecting consumers, informing the public and promoting architecture
