About
We are seeking an experienced Chair to lead our Board, bringing strategic vision, industry expertise, and strong leadership to our governance. The successful candidate will have prior experience as a board chair, with a proven ability to lead and manage board meetings efficiently. Strong organisational skills, a commitment to the rail industry and asset management, and the capacity to navigate the needs of a not-for-profit are essential qualities for this role.
Transport for NSW leads the development of safe, sustainable, integrated and equitable transport systems for the people of NSW – evolving our state transport network to offer greater choice and seamless experiences to meet the diverse needs of its users. It works collaboratively with passengers, the workforce, industry and across government to unlock better services, economic potential, and social connectivity.
As part of Transport for NSW’s transformative agenda, the Transport Asset Manager (TAM) has been established to enhance the safety and reliability of the state's rail assets, facilitating long-term investment in rail infrastructure, while also allowing for efficient operations comparable to private sector standards. TAM will manage the NSW rail asset portfolio, promote access for freight operators, and streamline negotiations for access agreements – simplifying asset management by consolidating responsibilities within a single entity, reducing overlap and enhancing strategic planning for rail investments.
As a separate NSW statutory corporation, TAM will provide strategic oversight and assurance of the planning, procurement and maintenance of the State's transport assets, operating under Ministerial oversight and with an expert advisory board. With the primary objective of ensuring a safe and reliable network, TAM will also pursue social objectives such as investment in social housing, alongside its investment in rail assets.
Key Responsibilities:
Prepare for and lead effective, well-structured board meetings that promote productive discussions and decision-making.
Work collaboratively with the TAM Board to guide organisational strategy, ensuring alignment with TAM’s mission and goals.
Engage in the preparation and planning of board materials in advance of each meeting.
Facilitate open, constructive dialogue among board members to foster a cohesive and focused governance team.
Key areas of knowledge of the Board Chair include:
Knowledge of public sector enabling legislation.
Extensive understanding and experience in rail operations and an understanding of the regulatory frameworks which govern and regulate transport assets.
Significant understanding of asset management frameworks in the heavy rail sector.
Significant experience in the management of property and portfolio management.
Significant understanding and experience working with Audit and Risk Committees.
Experience working with ministers, parliamentary processes, political landscapes and navigating complex issues.
