About

Call for Expressions of Interest

The NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) is seeking Expressions of Interest (EOI) from Aboriginal people to fill four coastal and inland regional membership positions on the NSW Aboriginal Fishing Advisory Council (AFAC) and to create a talent pool for other regional vacancies that may arise.

The AFAC has been established to provide strategic level advice to the Minister for Agriculture on issues affecting Aboriginal fishing. The Council also plays an important role in the development of cultural fishing policy as well as exploring commercial opportunities for Aboriginal communities associated with fishing activities.

Council members receive an annual yearly payment of $2500, which is paid fortnightly. Reasonable costs incurred by members travelling to and from council meetings and any pre-approved accommodation associated with expenses will also be reimbursed.

The EOI process is hoping to attract members with diverse knowledge and experience to address the varied fisheries related matters that will need focus. This includes the social and cultural significance of cultural fishing, and commercial fishing for Aboriginal people. Regional representatives need to have knowledge of, and capacity to speak for their local region on fisheries related issues.

The available positions are (please refer to map on the NSW Department of Primary Industries Aboriginal Fishing Advisory Council webpage for Region boundaries)

  • Region 1 (Far Western)
  • Region 2 (North West)
  • Region 5 (Northern)
  • Region 10 (Far South Coast)
